“Here in Pakistan I often see evil face to face, yet I witnessed a great desire of Good”

It is a Summer of blood and persecutions for Christians of Pakistan: one month ago a slaughter in Punjab and in this early September another attack killed 5 persons and wounded 7 others in Quetta, Belucistan. Is this a country of hate only? Miguel Angel Ruiz, a Salesian Father, offers a genuine account of his experience at the Don Bosco Youth Centre in Lahore, one that is far from being “politically correct”. It helps to read the massacres of Christians in a complex country, where hidden acts of solidarity are nevertheless still possible. (Photo : Saint Patrick's Cathedral - Karachi - Pakistan)

Algeria. Personal friendship as a privileged path in Islamic-Christian relations

In order to further evangelise Islamic-Christian relations and open them to new perspectives, Mgr Henri Tessier, Archbishop Emeritus of Algiers, looks back at his own personal history as pastor and leader of the local Christian community during the darkest and most violent hours in the country’s recent past.

Asia. Interpreting religious traditions in order to save them from becoming empty boxes

The interview with Fr Bernardo Cervellera, editor of AsiaNews, gives us another opportunity to further our reflection on “Interpreting tradition in the age of métissage of civilisations”, something which began in June at the Venice meeting of the Oasis scientific committee.

USA. Education and immigration, the pathway for dialogue between Christians and Muslims

Meetings to further enhance Christian-Islamic dialogue continue in the United States, including some promoted by the US Bishops’ Conference. Although topics might vary, the goal is always the same, i.e. how to develop the will to address real, everyday issues. Out West immigration was the main topic, starting with a comparative look at the experiences of Jesus and Muhammad with an eventually broader focus on the dramatic issues that have emerged out of today’s worldwide movement of peoples; back East discussions centred on how to teach religion in schools in order to build a good life in a plural society.

Africa. So that the world does not look away: cries from Sudan’s Churches

Oasis renews the appeal made in mid-August by the Sudanese Council of Churches. The Council’s members are united in calling on everyone, from people of faith to the international community, to do everything in their power to prevent the collapse of the country’s peace agreement, which was signed after 20 years of civil war. They also urge them to undertake whatever steps are necessary to promote its development.
