Forefront

Free to believe, free to convert Two months after Oasis’ scientific committee met in Amman many of the participants, back in their respective cultural contexts, continue to reflect and exchange ideas on religious freedom, the meeting’s main topic. From Tunis H.E. Mgr Maroun Lahham, bishop of Tunis, picks up the thread of that discussion in an interview with our newsletter. In it he explains the difference between freedom of worship and freedom of religion.

Correspondence Mgr Claudio Gugerotti writes from Georgia, a country in the spotlight for the past few months. The Apostolic Nuncio in this country explains what has been simmering for centuries beneath the mountainous lands of the Caucasus.

From Lebanon journalist Fady Noun, brings us up to date with regards to the hopes and doubts his country is carrying as it gets ready for elections next year.

From the Philippines Fr Sebastiano D’Ambra traces the steps of hundreds of young Christians and Muslims who met in Mindanao to discuss peace at a time when the winds of war are blowing.

From Indonesia Greg Soetomo, editor of the Jakarta-based Catholic weekly Hid Up, in a sort of travel journal, notes how “face to face” meetings between witnesses to the world are one of Oasis’ preferred ways.

Oasis proposes the full text of the address by Card Jean-Louis Tauran, president of the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue, to the International Inter-Faith Conference held in July in Madrid under the sponsorship of Saudi King Abdullah.
