Sadr in Tehran To Apologize For The Cheers Of His Supporters

Ash-Sharq al-Awsat

May 4, 2016

An Iranian observer source from a European capital revealed that the sudden visit of the Sadrist movement’s leader in Iraq Muqtada al-Sadr to Iran yesterday aimed “to contain the repercussions of the slogans launched by dozens of his supporters demanding the departure of Iran from Iraq, during demonstrations in the Green Zone”.

The source added to Al-Sharq al-Awsat that Sadr was received in Tehran airport by the Secretary General of the Iranian National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani. The source saw that Sadr being greeted by this “high-level figure in Iran” holds a “message of reassurance to Sadr that Iran has not forgotten him and it is interested in him, but also a warning and a blame that he should pay attention to Iran after his steps recently seemed taking another path to what was considered by Tehran as invariable in Iraq, and in the forefront, the unity of the Shiite House.”

Furthermore a report released by «Amnesty International» yesterday confirms the existence of illegal and secret detention centers in Iraq. The report said that “a delegation from the organization visited a detention center in the Amiriyah Fallujah and found 700 prisoners who have been detained for several months on suspicion of terrorism.” It added that “the conditions of their detention are really shocking. Each one of them lives in an area that does not exceed one square meter, the bathrooms are inside the rooms, in addition to the short amount of food.”

Iraqi sources saw that such a report would increase the troubles of Prime Minister Haydar al-Abadi, who faces protests and widespread criticism because of corruption.
