Antonios Naguib an Egyptian, was ordained a priest in 1960 and was appointed Bishop of Minya in 1977. He was elected Patriarch of Alexandria of the Copts on March 30, 2006 by the Synod of the Coptic Catholic Church and was confirmed on April 7 by Pope Benedict. He is President of the Synod of the Coptic Church and of the Egyptian Bishops’ Conference. Benedict XVI appointed him Relator General during the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for the Middle East that took place from October 10 to 24, 2010. The Pope made him Cardinal at the consistory on November 20, 2010.
