In the eye of the storm /2. Syria. The long history of civilisation and co-existence of this land runs the risk of succumbing in the face of the gravity of factors that have led the country to the verge of isolation, an isolation which by now appears to be irreversible: the difficulties of the Baathist regime, the dangers of Islamic terrorism, the crisis of the Lebanon, the war in Iraq, and the stagnation of the peace process.
