He was born in Prague in 1931. Married with five children, he was professor of philosophy at the universities of Notre Dame in the USA and of the Ludwigs-Maximilians University in Munich, Bavaria. President of the University of Munich from 1971 til 1982. Member of the Papal Council for Culture until 1992. 1984 to 1996 President of the Catholic University of Eichstätt. Currently director of the Institute for Central and Eastern European Studies (ZIMOS) of the University of Eichstätt.
