Two days of encounter, on 29-30 September 2005, organised by the municipality and the province of Venice together with IDEE (European Democratic Initiatives), to define the relationship between the Islamic world and democratic institutions. Scholars and political-institutional authorities from Islamic countries and Western countries came together to challenge the idea of the incompatibility of Islam and democracy and to point out, each according to their own experiences, possible pathways of openness and mutual understanding of the two realities. It was emphasised that the growing desire for democracy expressed by the Islamic populations is opening up a possible challenge in the search for democratic institutions that are not alien to their societies and their values.
