The first encounter of Benedict XVI with the North-East of Italy will take place in Aquileia. Here landed Saint Mark, the first to announce the Gospel to the people of this region, associated to the Egyptian Church of Alexandria in that it was founded by this evangelist. 17.00 Assembly of the first conference of Aquileia in the Basilica of Aquileia. 19.00 Meeting with the people in St Mark’s Square, Venice. Sunday 8 May 2011 10.00 Holy Mass in San Giuliano park, Mestre. 12.30 Departure from Mestre by patrol boat for St Mark’s Square, Venice. Water parade along the Grand Canal. 16.45 Assembly to mark the end of the diocesan pastoral visit in St Mark’s Basilica, Venice. 17.45 Departure by gondola from St Mark’s Square for Basilica della Salute, Venice. 18.00 Meeting with representatives of the cultural world and the economic world in the Basilica della Salute, Venice. Invited here by the Studium Generale Marcianum, a pedagogic, academic and research institute, Benedict XVI will meet the world of culture and that of economics. Representatives of the sectors of work, art, tourism and, generally, of civil society as a whole will be able to listen to the Pope interpreting the city’s beauty in terms of its task and the vocation it has for the whole world. This a moment of high civil relevance is to be placed within the path opened by the Holy Father’s contributions at the Collège des Bernardins Paris, Westminster Hall, London, the University of Regensburg, to mention but few.
